Washing bed linen: Tips for hygiene and longevity

Bed linen plays an important role in restorative sleep and should be washed regularly to ensure hygiene and freshness. Clean bed linen not only contributes to comfortable sleep, but also helps remove allergens, bacteria and dirt. In this article you will find everything you need to know about properly washing bed linen.

Why is regular washing of bed linen important?

Bed linen comes into daily contact with sweat, skin flakes, body oils and possibly house dust mites. Without regular cleaning, dirt can accumulate, leading to unpleasant odors and an unhygienic sleeping environment. Frequent changing and washing of bed linen is particularly beneficial for allergy sufferers. Washing effectively removes allergy-inducing substances such as mite feces. Experts recommend: change your bed linen every 2 weeks. In summer or in the case of allergies, change bed linen once a week.

Preparation: What should be considered before washing?

Good preparation makes washing bed linen easier and ensures optimal results. Observe the following steps:

  • Check the care label: Always read the washing instructions on the label of your bed linen. Here you will find information on wash temperature, material properties and drying options.
  • Sort colors: Separate light and dark bed linen to avoid color transfer. Wash white bed linen separately to maintain a bright white. We recommend for white laundry the Sonett Bleichkomplex, as it protects against greying of white laundry.
  • Close zippers and buttons: Fasten all zippers and buttons. This protects the bed linen from damage during the wash cycle.
  • Load correctly: Do not overload the washing machine so that the bed linen has enough space to be cleaned thoroughly.

The right temperature for washing bed linen

The optimal wash temperature depends on the material of the bed linen. Here are some guidelines:

  • Cotton: Wash cotton bed linen generally at 60060. This temperature is sufficient to remove bacteria and mites.
  • Microfiber: Wash microfiber bed linen at a maximum of 40 to 60. This preserves the material. Always follow the care instructions of the bed linen.
  • Silk: Wash silk bed linen at low temperatures (30). Use the gentle cycle. Also observe the information on the bed linen label.
  • Linen: Linen bed linen can be washed at 40 to 60. However, observe the manufacturer’s care instructions to protect the fibers.

The right detergent

The choice of detergent affects the care of bedding. Use a detergent matched to the material and the color:

  • All-purpose detergent: Use an all-purpose detergent. It is ideal for white cotton bedding because it contains bleaching agents that ensure a bright white.
  • Color Detergent: Use a color detergent for colored bedding. It protects the colors and prevents fading.
  • Delicate detergent: Use a delicate detergent for materials like silk or satin, because it is particularly gentle.
  • Fragrance-free detergent: If you are allergic or have sensitive skin, use a fragrance-free, skin-friendly detergent such as Sodasan Waschmittel Color sensitiv or Sonett Waschpulver Color sensitiv.

Tips for the washing machine

If you want to clean bedding thoroughly, the washing machine must be set correctly. Choose a program that uses sufficient water to rinse the bedding completely. As already mentioned, use a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics. For cotton bedding, select a normal wash program. Our recommendation: use an extra rinse cycle. This ensures that all detergent residues are removed. Alternatively, we recommend the Sonett Wäschespüler.

Drying bedding

Proper drying is essential to keep bedding soft and durable. Here are the best options:

  • In the tumble dryer: Cotton bedding can generally be dried in a tumble dryer without issue. As always, read the care label on the bedding. Use a gentle program to protect the fibers. Dryer balls help keep bedding fluffy.
  • Air drying: Bedding that must not go in the dryer should be dried outdoors. Hang the bedding flat to reduce ironing. In general, we recommend air-drying laundry rather than using a tumble dryer. It saves costs and is more sustainable.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: Avoid exposing colored laundry to direct sunlight, as this can fade the colors.

Ironing the bedding

Ironed bedding not only looks better but also feels smoother and more comfortable. Cotton and linen bedding can be ironed at high temperature, while delicate materials such as silk or satin should only be ironed at low temperature. If you prefer not to iron, use the steam mode of the dryer.

Sustainable tips for washing bedding

To protect the environment, you can take sustainable measures when washing bedding:

  • Energy-efficient washing: Wash at low temperatures when there are no heavy soiling. Modern washing machines also clean effectively at 40°C.
  • Fully load the machine: Fill the washing machine optimally to save water and energy.
  • Natural detergents: Use environmentally friendly detergents such as those from AlmaWin, Sodasan or Sonett. Alternatively, you can use DIY detergents made from laundry soap, soapnut shells and/or vinegar as a fabric softener substitute.
  • Air-dry: If possible, avoid using the tumble dryer and let the bedding air-dry.

Special care instructions

Different materials require specific care:

  • Silk: Use a specialized detergent and avoid aggressive spin cycles.
  • Satin: Satin bedding should be washed at low temperatures and on a gentle cycle.

Conclusion

Regular washing and the correct care of bedding are essential for a hygienic and comfortable sleeping environment. With the right techniques and detergents, your bedding will remain clean, soft and durable. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. And use environmentally friendly detergents. With these tips you can enjoy fresh bedding every night.
